There has always misunderstandings and confusion regarding the exactly constitutes a Ghazal. By tracing the history and development of Ghazals over more than a millennia and a half it has been in existence it becomes easier to understand the diverse and changing nature of Ghazals. In pre-Islamic Arabia the Ghazal was not recognized as a major genre of poetry. The central theme of a Ghazal is unattainable love. It describes the pain the poet feels about the following things his severity of passion, the pain of separation, the longing and his ardent love for his beloved.
During the early Islamic era there were no substantial changes in poetic practice. The pre-Islamic tradition continued more or less as it was except that the writings of the shorter poems became popular and was often used for political and religious purposes. The Ghazal along with other poetic genres inherited from its pre-Islamic origins the formal verse structure of the Qasidah.
A poem in this form is always constructed from lines of a single meter where each line is constructed from two metrical hemstitches and ends on the same rhyme. The Persians later added certain other features to the Ghazal but the underlying theme still remains the same.
The Ghazals came into its own during the Ummayun period and was understood to be a poetic genre of the time. The middle and upper classes of the new Arab world were ardent supporters of its Ghazals because of its suitability for music diversions.
The nature of Ghazals has changed over the years in order to meet the demands of light music entertainment and people s evolving tastes. With the growth and popularity of Ghazals different genres were formed, the most important of these genres are courtly love (udhari), erotic (hissi), introductory (tamhidi).In medieval Spain Ghazals are written in Hebrew as well as Arabic. Poems in Arabic forms have been written in a number of West African literary languages like Hausa and Fulfulde.
The style of a Ghazal requires a sweetness of word choice and a smoothness of meaning. In India ghazals of the late Persian form were written in Persian as well as other Indian languages. Today Ghazals in the late Persian form are written in Hindi, Guajarati, Punjabi, Bengali and every other major language of the continent.
